Punta de Mita Hotels: W Punta de Mita

W Hotels are some of my favorites in the world. Why? They’re really fun. While each one is different in that they cater to whatever destination they are in, you can always count on an entertaining and energetic staff, great food, a chill pool scene, and guests who are laid-back and easy-going. I recently had the chance to stay at the W Punta de Mita and can confirm that it was the exact vibe I was hoping for.

The W Punta de Mita recently wrapped a $3 million renovation, including some room categories, restaurants, and Living Room/Welcome Area. There is so much I loved about this renovation — the lobby in particular, which is decked out with more than 750,000 individual mosaic tiles inspired by the local Wixarika tribe. The details at the W Punta de Mita are bright, fun, and colorful, and help to give a sense of place.

I had been hearing about the W Punta de Mita since it opened in 2016 and I was very happy to have had the opportunity to check it out. I recommend it for couples and groups of friends.

Note: If you’re wondering, “where is Punta Mita?,” it’s easy. Punta Mita is north of Puerto Vallarta and just south of Sayulita. Flights to Punta Mita go through the airport in Puerto Vallarta

W Punta de Mita Reviews: The Vibe of W Punta de Mita

Overall Score: Extremely Memorable

The second we arrived, we changed right into our swimsuits and headed over to the adults-only pool. This chic, oceanfront pool has an entire wall made of glass, which I always think is a fun look. Immediately we were surrounded by new friends. That is my kind of resort. I love vibes that cater to friendly, outgoing people. Before long, we were sipping Champagne with new friends from California and Colorado.

The design is funky, and splashy, with great music and a super fun atmosphere. Plus, it’s super clean and they know the art of hospitality here.

Beachfront. Check. Pool for families. Check. Pool for only adults. Check. What more could you ask for?

I love a resort that offers a few different areas to hang out. The beach is beautiful, with views out across the Bay of Banderas and into the Pacific Ocean. You will never get tired of the views around the Bay of Banderas.

The resort is family-friendly, but honestly, you’d never know it. (That’s a positive for me. I tend to like adults-only properties.) The family-friendly pool is just as nice as the adults-only pool. I may argue that it’s even nicer than the adults-only pool because it’s a lot bigger with more cabanas and shaded daybeds. I was visiting in August, though, so there weren’t too many families there. I bet the adults-only pool can be quite the haven when the resort is at capacity.

We stayed in the jungle view guest rooms, which were part of the renovations. I personally found these rooms to be dark and a little lackluster.

Note: The picture above is from the resort website. This is pretty accurate for what our room looked like with the blinds open. There is no view, so it can feel a little closed in. If you look at the other rooms on the site, they all look much brighter so I recommend a different category.

I hate to be too much of a downer, so I will say that the bed was extremely comfortable, the air conditioning was strong, and it had plenty of outlets, which are all things that are very important to me.

Next time I would book an oceanview room or one of the rooms surrounding the lagoon.

W Punta de Mita Reviews: The Dining at W Punta de Mita

Overall Score: Above Average

By far the best dining experience we had at W Punta de Mita was the tequila pairing dinner. Typically this experience is set in a secluded agave garden. When we visited it was probably 9,000 degrees out because it was August so we happily opted to switch to the private dining room next to the lobby bar, which was perfect.

Our tequila expert, Jose, guided us through a variety of top-level tequilas, each of which was paired with a different course. The entire experience was five courses and three tequilas (plus a few bonus tequilas). It was an engaging, educational, and delicious tastebud tour.

I also loved the tuna ceviche at the pool. I think I ordered that three times while we were there. Also if you have the opportunity to try the chocolate truffles, do it. We had a lovely box of truffles left in our room and I ate the entire thing by myself.

The only miss for me was room service. But, to be honest, I am rarely wowed by room service at most resorts.

Things to Do in Punta de Mita: The Wellness at W Punta de Mita

Overall Score: N/A

If you can believe it, I didn’t go to the gym once while I was at the resort. I threw my back out that week and could barely move. But I did hear from our new friends (who were in excellent shape) that the gym was fantastic. And it’s open 24 hours. They also got facials at the spa and said that it was a great experience.
