An Escape from the Escape
Puerto Escondido might not seem like a beach town you need to escape from. Mostly because everyone who is escaping everything else is already here. But believe it or not, there is a certain cap on the amount of squinty-eyed surfers telling me to 'Keep on Keepin on' that I can take. Just in time when I needed a hideout from my hideaway, I was introduced to Playa Carrizalillo.
Without a doubt this is one of the best-kept secrets of Puerto Escondido, and probably the most beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches around here, which are known for their aggressive surf, Playa Carrizalillo is a small slice of tranquil heaven, with uncharacteristically teal water, sugary sand, and nary a squinty-eyed surfer. Paddle boarders are another story.
What keeps Carrizalillo so secretive is the snaky, wheeze-inducing tower of stairs that hug the cliff down the sea. More that 150 steps take beachcombers down to the private hideaway. Once your feet hit the sand you'll have your pick of palapa beach bars all making various versions of the same ceviche, tacos, and guacamole. Spring for a fresh coconut and fill it with rum, or gently nurse a frosty Victoria. Just remember to return to reality eventually. I know it will be hard.
